One of the most intriguing albums to pop through the letterbox in months, Giddy Motors gracefully patch together cross genre elements into their own prodigious sound.
By intentionally combining the jazz influences of Miles Davis and Christian Vander with angular US punk, a smattering of Captain Beefheart and The Jesus Lizard, their label FatCat Records say they defy easy categorisation. Reading the back catalogue of influences they cite, you'd have to agree!
Formed a little over two years ago in South London by guitarist and vocalist Gaverick de Vis and Manu Ross (bass/drums) the band recently acquired Gordon Ashdown full-time on bass and amalgamated into their present style. Make it Pop was recorded over nine days in Chicago with legendary producer Steve Albini in the autumn of last year.
This unique album pulls out all the stops from the first track "Magmanic" onwards. The sheer originality of the frenzied angular punk onslaught glides neatly into the less frenetic "Cranium Crux" and the more acoustic groove of "Venus Medallist".
The album concludes with their recent debut single, the coruscating "Whirled By Curses". Retaining a curiously gelled effect despite mixing a cocktail of pop simplicity, jazz complexity and rhythmic disarray, Giddy Motors cram funk and punk into their symphonic ramble and still offer the most unusual compelling sonic boom of the moment.
Cacophonic fusion of punk power, pop universality and jazz intricacy pervade on an album that has indeed succeeded in making it Pop. Giddy Motors are a band on the verge of receiving more than one laudatory review. In the meantime though, they're very happy doing their own thing.
